THERE IS AN UPDATE FOR THIS ARTICLE, CHECK HERE – BLACKWING DECK FEBRUARY 2016
As it is nowadays, Blackwings is not really a top-tier deck. We’ve got some new support cards in March of 2015 but in my opinion they still can’t compete with newest decks. You can still do pretty well in tournaments thanks to their versatility, but it’s hard. There are a lot of ways to play BWs, you can mix them with other archetypes or run different versions of pure blackwings (beatdown, vayu turbo,). I’m going to describe my way of playing them which is a pure BW’s beatdown deck, so when I say that a certain card is good or not used anymore, I refer exclusively to those kind of decks.
So here is my deck recipe for april 2015 ban list:
Monsters (20) :
Side Deck (15)
Single cards explanations:
Blizzard: decent card, easy lvl 6, helps you swarm the field. You can summon gale with it and activate it’s effect or summon a target for Icarus Attack. 1 copy of blizzard is enough, usually I search it with Pinaki’s effect.
Bora: 3 of those. Easy synchro summons and lvl 4 xyz, piercing dmg, decent ATK.
Gale: x3 Always. It’s plain to see how good this card is, without me saying anything.
Gladius: easy Nothung with Pinaki or Gale. Searchable by summoning your tuner monsters while having whirlwind and the reason why Pinaki is currently better than Steam IMO.
Kalut: probably the best BW monster alongside with Gale, so always run 3 of those dudes.
Kris: bora’s big bro, can be special summoned from your hand and can’t be destroyed by effects once per turn. Oh, and he has 1900 ATK. The best effect monster that was released for blackwings since gale / kalut, in my opinion. If Black Whirlwind is in play, but you suspect your opponent having bottomless / torrential it may be clever to normal summon Kris in order to activate Whirlwind’s effect. You can choose it as a second target for Icarus attack if your opponent has only 1 card on the field, and this card must be destroyed. In similar way you can activate torrential on it’s summon or a Dark Hole, and still have a monster in play.
Oroshi: is really good thanks to Nothung -> Hawk Joe combo. Searchable by any other blackwing monster in the deck, can be ss immediately afterwards, can change one monster’s battle position, even if it is set. Why not run it?
Pinaki: I feel like 1 is enough, summon it with Shura, synchro, get your Blizzard / Oroshi and go for Nothung – Hawk Joe.
Shura: second strongest lvl 4 after Kris. The best combo with Shura’s effect is to summon Pinaki -> synchro Hawk Joe, add Blizzard to your hand. Next turn (hopefully Hawk Joe is still in play), summon Blizzard, ss Shura from the graveyard, synchro for Nothung, activate it’s effects. If you have oroshi, summon oroshi, synchro for another lvl 7 and ss your Nothung with Hawk Joe effect.
Zephyros: great card that can be easily played in many decks because of its awesome effect. Black Whirlwind / Call of the Haunted /Fiendish Chain / Gale / Kris / Bora, Oroshi can all be easily returned to your hand as cost and replayed immediately after.
Book of Moon, Raigeki: staples.
Black Whirlwind. Ok, so, I’ve seen some deck profiles on the internet that run 2 black whirlwinds commenting that 3 were too heavy – wat? It’s like saying that 3 kaluts or 3 gales are too heavy. Black whirlwind is the best, you hear me, the best blackwing spell there is (actually it is probably the only one good, lol).
Forbidden Lance: let’s you decrease your opponents monsters ATK and win battles, works great with Shura, protects your monsters from nasty spell / trap cards.
Bottomless, Compulsory, Solemn Warning, Torrential: staples.
Call of the Haunted: a great thing about Nothung is that his effect can be activated whenever you special summon him (not synchro summon), so I run 1 copy of CotH to bring him back in case he gets destroyed. Even better is to have both Hawk Joe and Nothung in your grave, activate CotH, ss Hawk Joe -> ss Nothung with Joe’s effect.
Dimensional Prison over Mirror Force and Black Sonic. I consider Dimensional Prison to be a compromise between Mirror Force and Black Sonic. Sonic is useless if you have no face-up blackwings, situation that can easily happen during a game and Mirror Force sends your opponent monsters to the grave which sometimes doesn’t really hurt decks like Burning Abyss or Shaddols.
Fiendish chain: great card, potential target for zephyros’ / vulcan’s effect. 2 copies are just fine in my opinion. Stops consecrated light.
Icarus Attack – oh yeah! Such a great card, so good. Remember that you can tribute you face down winged-beast, so a possible way of dealing with Consecrated Light is to set a blackwing and activate Icarus Attack. (I hate consecrated light so much because my friends at my locals who have played a lot vs me know how much this card hurts blackwings and side 2-3 copies of it every time we are about to start a tournament)
Vanity’s Emptiness: a double-edged sword, you have to learn when to activate it in order to not hurt yourself. In my opinion it combos very well with “Macro Cosmos” – by simply having those 2 cards I was able to block Shaddoll, Burning Abyss and Dark World a couple of times. Blackwings will overpower any top deck in terms of ATK thanks to Kris / Shura / Bora / Gale so you might as well block special summons. You can improve the combo even further by summoning Key Beetle (if you run it, before activating Emptyness obviously) and applying its effect on both cards, but it’s a bit harder to do.
– Extra Deck
Abyss Dweller: once I decided to take this card out of my extra deck and lost a match because of not having it. It’s capable of blocking many top decks so always keep it – don’t repeat my mistake.
Armades: your lvl 5 synchro that you will summon sometimes with Oroshi or Blizzard + Kalut. Prefer him over Catastor because it can avoid spells / traps, Gorz. Super strong vs Yang Zings.
Black Rose Dragon: tough situation? You know what to do.
Black Rose Moonlight Dragon Clear Wing Synchro Dragon: not much to say, can be easily summoned, has great effect.
Armed Wing: even though Nothung is in 90% of cases is a preferable lvl 6 synchro, there are still those 10% when you need to do some piercing damage. If your opponent has a boss monster with high attack, or you are afraid of Honest or something – summon Armed Wing, ss Oroshi, Synchro summon Hawk Joe, activate oroshi effect, change your opponent’s monster battle position, bring back Armed Wing with Hawk Joe’s effect and inflict some damage!
Armor Master: doesn’t he look cool? Easily summoned, great effect, can protect your Hawk Joe from being destroyed in battle.
Nothung the Starlight: hm… Is this the best blackwing card released so far? Let’s see. 1) Inflicts 800 points of damage whenever he is summoned and lowers the ATK and DEF of one of your opponents monsters (combo with Ragnazero). And it lets you normal summon a second time!!!!!! Yeah, I’d say it’s definitely the best blackwing synchro monster we have. If you happen to have Black Whirlwind + Blizzard in your hand, always go for Oroshi -> Hawk Joe combo.
Hawk Joe: 2 synchros for the cost of one – what else could you wish for? He synergizes very well with Nothung and Armor Master, has nice stats, and is considered a “Blackwing” monster.
Castiel: lvl 4 xyz with 2 good effects, even if he has no xyz materials anymore, you can still use him to activate Icarus Attack.
Exciton: xyz version of Black Rose Dragon except that it doesn’t blow himself up. Honestly I wasn’t able to use him much, but once or twice he saved me, so I keep him for such cases.
Gagaga Cowboy: sometimes you lack those 500-800 LP to finish your opponent – well, just summon Cowboy and activate its second effect. By combining Cowboy and Nothung you can inflict a fair amount of effect damage to your opponent.
Number 101: is almost a staple. 2100 ATK lvl 4 xyz that can steal your opponents monster and has to be destroyed twice – absolutely to run.
Trishula: probably the strongest synchro in the game atm? Not really hard to summon considering that we have a lvl 1-2-3-4 monsters in our deck which can be easily searched for.
Side deck explanation:
Imperial Iron Wall: “oh, what do you have there? A Nekroz deck? Wait, I forgot to put some cards in mine.” This format we are going to see a lot of Nekroz decks and thanks to Iron Wall we can blocks Valkyrus on-hand effect, Trishula, and their spells.
Dimensional Fissure / Macro Cosmos: current meta focuses too much on the effects that either activate im the graveyard or let you bring cards back from it. The above deck doesn’t really do those things, except for Blizzard / Zephyros / Hawk Joe, so we might as well banish everything that goes to the grave. Remember though, that, if Macro Cosmos / Dimensional Fissure is in play – you can’t activate Kalut’s effect.
Mind Crush: to side vs Nekroz, tellarknights, Yosenju. I saw some people running 3 copies in their main deck, IMO, Crush doesn’t work so well vs some decks like Shaddols or Burning Abyss.
Mystical Space Typhoon: well, MST was a staple back in 2003, and still it is the best staple single spell / trap removal card in the game. If you happen to face a deck that runs “Royal Decree’s”, you are going to have a hard time because the only card that can destroy it (Icarus Attack) will be blocked and all your traps will become useless. It is very important to destroy a potential bottomless / compulsory / solemn warning before normal summoning in order to activate black whirlwind effect. Im not sure anymore if in this format MSTs are worth being in the main deck, so for now I keep them in my side.
Soul Drain: to side alongside Macro Cosmos and Dimensional Fissure. It’s a bit weaker than other 2, because played cards will still end in the graveyard. but hopefully it will stall your opponent for a couple of turns. Kalut can be activated while Soul Drain is in play.
Skill Drain: vs Nekroz, Tellarknights, Yosenju.
Ojama Trio: Great vs Burning Abyss and somewhat decent vs Tellarknights.
Cards worth mentioning:
Blackwing – Kochi the Daybreak: i like Kochi for several reasons. 1) It’s a lvl 4 tuner, easy lvl 8 synchro with bora or kris. 2) It can be searched with black whirlwind by summoning almost any other BW (he is weak, lol). 3) It can be summoned with shura’s effect for a rank 4 xyz. He is slow though, so currently there are better cards to put instead of him.
Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn: Nice card, after march 2015 isn’t really used anymore thanks to Kris.
Blackwing Steam the Cloak: got decent effect, but Pinaki’s searching ability is better considering how good blizzard + oroshi combo is. Steam on other hand gives you a lvl one token every time he leaves the field, can summon any synchro and not just blackwings, and can brought back from the grave using its effect. How cool would it be to have a decent lvl 9-10 blackwing synchro…
Dark Armed Dragon: I like this card, but I don’t run it because it’s often a dead draw in late game when you have many BW’s in your graveyard and no real control over it.
Number 66: Master Key Beetle: has really great ATK for it’s rank, nice effect, but is rarely used by me… Usually when you have 2 level 4 blackwings on your field you keep them for Kalut, Icarus Attack, possible synchro or go for a better lvl 4 xyz.
Allure of Darkness: call me crazy, I don’t like allure. It speeds deck a little but it doesn’t increase the number of cards in your hand or gives any kind of benefit like “Destiny Draw”, “Solar Recharge”, “Yang Zing Path”, etc. so I prefer to run some other card instead.
Pot of Duality: I run 3 copies of PoD before march, but I decided not to include it anymore because now that Gale is back at 3 and Kris is finally released, blocking your own special summons is kinda… masochistic.
Anti-Spell Fragrance: good card in combination with Delta Crow, can be sided vs Nekroz this format.
Black Horn of Heaven: I thought this card to be better that it actually is. Check change log of “31 / 03” for details at the beginning of this article.
Delta Crow – Anti Reverse: works great with Anti-Spell Fragrance.
Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons: very strong monster, but because I don’t run Sirocco or Kochi is kinda hard to summon. I mean I could use my lvl 7 synchro with Oroshi or lvl 6 with Blizzard, but why do it?…
Number 103: Ragnazero: it’s a good card because of Gale / Nothung, sadly side deck can contain only 15 cards otherwise I would definitely play it.
Shared Ride: at first I didn’t like this card, but then I sided it vs Nekroz, and boy, did it work great. It’s almost always a +2 or +3 for you considering how many cards that deck is adding from their hand or graveyard (remember though that if 2 or more cards are added to the hand from the Deck or Graveyard by a card like “Preparation of Rites”, you will only draw 1 card. (You do not draw 1 card for each card added to the hand). Good side deck card.
Ice Beast Zerofyne: a great rank 4 xyz which can’t be used by many decks because it requires you to overlay 2 winged beasts. By detaching 1 xyz material you can negate the effects of all face-up cards your opponent currently controls and for each of those, Zerofyne gains 300 ATK (both those effects are applied untill your next turn). Seems really-really good on paper, thing is, in the current meta, there are just too many monsters that activate their effects either in the graveyard (Shaddoll, Burning Abyss, Yang Zing) on in the hand (Nekroz). And other decks, such as tellarknights, don’t really have scary permanent effects which you might need to negate, so I prefer to run something else instead of it.
How to counter Blackwings:
– Trap holes / everything that blocks summons / compulsory on normal summon. A very important ruling people don’t know about black whirlwind is: “The effect of “Black Whirlwind” starts a Chain. If an effect is chained, so that the Summoned “Blackwing” monster is no longer face-up on the field when the effect of “Black Whirlwind” resolves, you cannot add a monster to your hand”. That’s why if you have a possibility to destroy a newly summoned blackwing – do it. Bora, Gale, Kris can’t be summoned if there are no other blackwings on the field so always try to clear your opponent field as early as possible and keep it that way.
– Consecrated Light. Da best card vs blackwings. If you summon consecrated light when there are no monsters on your opponents field he is pretty much done. Blackwing hardly run any non-dark type monsters, so it is a great card to block the deck.
– dark hole / raigeki / torrential tribute – anything that clears the field.
Light-counters / hard-timers
– Skill Drain, Shadow-Imprisoning mirror. Shadow imprisoning mirror is scarier because it also negates your Zephyros without any cost, but still… Even if my shura has lost its effect – it’s still a 1800 beatstick. Bora is 1700. Kris 1900. And I can still special summon them from my hand, as well as gale. Oh and I can synchro with gale, for 2500 ATK. Let’s not forget Kalut ^^. Never forget Kalut!
– Kaiser Colosseum. I was having a really hard time vs Bujin-Colosseum deck. BWs power comes from numbers which thanks to Colosseum you can’t really bring into the game.
– Decks with Royal Decree. Unless you run a triple MST those might be a problem.

Hey guys! It’s been a while since I did my last update of this deck cause of my laziness, but no worries, now I’m back and ready to level up this guide even further! Because this section was getting too big I decided to leave only the latest update description, hope you don’t mind! Honestly, even though I haven’t written in a while it’s not like there is much that can be said about Blackwings – they are where there were monthes ago, still pretty solid, tier 2-3 IMO. The latest ban list gave us the access to one of the strongest synchro monsters in the game – Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier (instead of Vulcan, which is good, but we have even better lvl 6 options, as such I never summoned him, maybe once…) which we absolutely have to play, right? Then, (and that makes me understand how much time has passed since I’ve updated the article for the last time) Clear Wing Synchro Dragon is out and personally I really like it, it’s like the upgraded version of the Black Rose Moonlight Dragon, so I swapped one for the other. And… And nothing, that’s pretty much it. Main deck remains the same for the time being, even though I have in my mind some things that’s worth testing, so I hope that the next update will be more interesting, but for the time being it is as it is. However, I’ve made a little change to my extra deck that’s I guess is worth explaining: I’ve swapped 3 Shared Rides for 2 Ojama Trio and a Skill Drain. Reason for it being that Shared Ride, compared to the Mistake doesn’t really prevent your opponent from doing anything. It’s not a “counter” card which may let you survive yet another turn by blocking your opponent’s play, it’s more (as it’s name implies) a “quo pro quo” – you both gain something from it, but if it’s happening on your opponent’s turn you might not have the possibility to play the cards you’ve drawn. Now, why did I choose Skill Drain and Ojama Trio and not something else? Well, the first one is almost a staple, it blocks Nekroz, Tellarknights which are the top 2 decks atm (till the next ban list prob), and it’s also pretty decent vs Yosenju. So yeah. Ojama Trio is one of the best counters vs the Burning Abyss which, as always IMO, is just as strong as Nekroz and Tellarknights and probably will be the top deck if tellarknight will be hit in the next list (which will happen most likely). Funny thing is that Ojama Trio also works pretty decent vs tellarknight – wait for your opponents to summon 2 monsters and activate it in order to prevent your opponent from doing a rank 4 xyz using 3 tellarknight / star seraphs. Also, with Oroshi’s effect we may actually turn an Ojama token into the attack position and go for a direct attack (or simply do some piercing dmg with Bora or Armed Wing + some Kaluts). These are the changes I’ve made after I came back from my “vacation” which obviously will be reviewed more and more, just give me some time to get back into the game!
Phew, that was a lot of typing. I hope that you guys enjoyed it, please please please give me your feedback, I’d really like to know how I can improve / what kind of articles would you like me to write. If you disagree with something I’ve written or have a question feel free to ask! Once again, this guide is based entirely on my own experience as a player and I’m not trying to say that this build is the best or something – just wanted to share my thoughts with you guys. All the best!
